The Full size graphic top of page is to help understand the progression of Asthma in your life. We have broken it up into four parts to explain and help you understand and overcome your Asthma.
Once your more completely understand your asthma, and what it is, you will no longer be afraid of it and well on your way to mastering it.
At the Start here in the graphic A, small sc graphic just above, illustrates that you had something happen to you that your survival involuntary body control picked up as an aid to improving your survival from what happened and made it into an incorrect habit, rather accidentally.
Your Asthma, we explain is really a breathing control mistake your involuntary body control system has made along the line and has been developed over time into a progressing worsening, even life threatening situation.
That is hard to accept in a paragraph and we have explained else where more completely.
You should know that developing asthma is part of your life protecting system and those who have it's built in activation genes live longer and come down with less diseases, then those people that do not have this life saving control built in.
So your asthma is actually a life protecting system activated by your survival system to prevent this inadvertent breathing error from doing you body damage or even killing you.
Related to this overbreathing are medical conditions called hyper ventilation, and panic attacks. We refer to it here as over breathing which means you are breathing too often and too deep, often to six times what is needed.
This overbreathing (over exhaling is correct term) causes over loss of carbon dioxide necessary to carry and distribute the plentiful oxygen in your lungs and blood stream to cells. The danger to your life, is body cells thus starved for oxygen as a result, not able to do their job, such as your heart muscle, your immune cells staving off invaders etc.
Your survival system knows if this continues and/or worsens your life is in danger, and therefore to make you a "survivor" (its job) must take action to correct it. It has to figure out a way to slow you from further overbreathing, that could lead to death.
So this over breathing start can be psychologically or physiologically based, involving either or/both breathing too deeply or too rapidly (hyperventilation).
Once started you develop the feeling you cannot get enough air.
All the while having adequate oxygen in your blood but actually breathing out too much leaves little carbon dioxide in their blood which means little is actually delivered to cells.
While oxygen is abundant, the increased over breathing has exhaled too much carbon dioxide, which is needed to carry oxygen to cells, thus plenty of oxygen in the blood, but not adequately delivered to now oxygen starved cells.
This is known as the BOHR effect. This rapid breathing causes carbon dioxide levels to fall below healthy levels, as we said and at the same time respiratory alkalosis (high blood pH) develops.
One theory is most bacteria and virus spring up when your body ph, (acid or alkaline status) is overly high acidic. Processed food, sugar etc contribute to this, another long story, but your survival system when down with a major illness has a job to make you a survivor and it is thought this ability to turn your body into overly alkaline with over breathing called alkalosis, may be to make a hostile alkaline non survival environment for viruses and bacteria attacking etc.
This survival over breathing in times of high fever etc fighting off invaders may be the start of your involuntary body system latching on to and continuing beyond the major illness, this over breathing method to keep your body alkaline and fight off invaders.
Once you have extended this over breathing to stress events etc it becomes more ingrained. Every time you have a stress event the automatic reaction becomes to over breath.
The more you over breath the more you have over exhaled carbon dioxide and lowered oxygen delivered to cells and the correct feeling your cells are not getting enough oxygen.
This makes the symptoms worse, which causes the person to try breathing even faster, which further continues escalation of the problem.
The respiratory alkalosis leads to changes in the way the body and nervous system react and set off what is known as a panic attack, that your breathing etc is out of control.
This makes the symptoms worse, which causes the person to try breathing even faster, which with further over exhalation of carbon dioxide continues escalation of the problem.
These happenings that hyper ventilation (over breathing) are normal part of include adverse reaction to some food, Therefore there are many theories over what really started to begin the "over breathing'.

It may take only weeks after an illness for over breathing to escalate to where the lowered blood oxygen from over exhaling carbon dioxide, makes you certain you are not breathing enough and increase it furthering the problem. or it may take years, but when in over breathing your lowered blood oxygen ability make subject you to inadequate oxygen to your heart muscle, to your immune system etc.
When under stress you over breath further lowering oxygen delivery to your brain and you do dumb things or fail to pass tests etc.
You now start taking nose clearing drugs etc and other over the counter breathing aids allowing deeper breathing worsening and escalating the over exhalation of carbon dioxide, so it becomes almost automatic your over breathing worsens over time and maybe even be years developing to full Asthma.
We have drawn In E, that your lowered oxygen delivery from over breathing is making you a prime candidate for other diseases etc. When Your life is in Danger from over breathing, your automatic survival Asthma Automatically kicks in as survival technique.

When your body feels your life is in danger from your over breathing it first stops up your nose to slow breathing. If this does not stop over breathing and you get nose opening drugs, it then escalates to inflaming airways. This makes them hyper allergic to every allergen on the block so you will blame them .
True, that set it off but over breathing is the cause you are hyper allergenitic to cut over breathing and lower carbon dioxide loss. ...

No one with a blood carbon dioxide of 6.5% has ever been found with a killer disease or ailment. When your carbon dioxide level is 6% or higher you are in perfect health. Taking your carbon dioxide level can be done in a test and it should be made as the overall standard to know that your body is in perfect health.
As an asthmatic, you are a person overbreathing, up to more breathing then needed for six people, you may be in the 3% range which is extreme danger.
Your involuntary breathing control system has latched on to an incorrect level of carbon dioxide to start breathing too early and too much and continues it now as a HABIT.
A habit ingrained for years is very hard to break, therefore how hard this asthma is for you to correct will have a lot to do with how long you have had the "asthma" (overbreathing habit).
Kids can often relearn to switch back to correct breathing in a few lessons or practice sessions where as someone with asthma for 20 years is going to have to work long and hard to correct this well engrained "long term" breathing mistake habit.
There are different ways to teach your automatic breathing control system to change its ways to correct less frequent and less deep breathing.
There are three breathing retraining systems, the most tested and well known is the Buteyko breathing courses, videos and self help books.
This is a manual exercise system that takes much repetition and work to "retrain" your breathing. For example 3 half hour daily exercise sessions for weeks, or even months to completely retrain.
Everyone, that has been in on studies, (6 so far) that did even some of the exercises at least, reported an improvement in their asthma with an average 90% off of medications.
There are other methods, not yet fully proven that can likely accomplish this retraining in a fraction of the time and we are following those closely and will be bringing you information as these are tested.
